In this blog post I will provide you with all the information about the best ways to reach the city of Como.

Get to Como by public transportation

If you are traveling by public transportation, Como is very well connected by train with Milan and Switzerland; this mode I recommend you to avoid having to look for parking and worry about ZTL or time disk.

From Milan

Como has two train station: Como Nord Lago and Como San Giovanni, both comfortable to visit the town and get the ferries to explore the Lake.

From Milano Cadorna (the station in the historical center of Milan) you can easily reach Como Nord Lago, as soon as you leave the train you’ll be along the lake side, ferry ticket office and historical centre.

From Milano Centrale (central station, the interchange with fast trains) you will reach Como San Giovanni, with a train to Switzerland. From here you can reach the historical center and the lake side in 10 minutes walking.

From Switzerland

The best train station to reach Como from Switzerland is Como San Giovanni. With so many trains during the day, you can consider Como as a day trip from Lugano or Locarno too.

You can also use taxis and busses to get to the historical centre, but you will miss a very beautiful walk, in addition there could be delays and the taxi fares are pretty high.

Get to Como by car

If you are traveling by car you can easily arrive in Como along the highway, keep in mind that Como is a crowded city, you may want to consider the possibility to park outside the city center and reach it by bus or train.

Parking areas outside Como:

  • Parcheggio Valmulini,
  • Parcheggio della stazione di Grandate-Breccia
  • Parcheggio della stazione di Como Camerlata

Parking garage in Como Como:

  • Autosilo comunale
  • Autosilo ospedale Valduce
  • Autosilo Centro Lago

Other places to park are blue lines parking spots (for payment, check the parking meter for the price) or white lines, pay attention if the parking disc is required and the maximum time of parking.

Here is a map with the parking area I told you before.

Around Como

To move around the city the bestway is to walk. The most popular spots are walking distance from the train stations. If you need to use a transportation for any reason consider the urban busses. They are easy to get and allow you to reach the main parts of the city with a single ticket, you can also pay with your credid card on board.

Usually I do not reccommend taxis, ’cause they prefer not to accept short distance rides or charge you too much. Also, the traffic in the historical centre can be tough.

Busses are also a good option to avoid the long queues at the ferry station during high season.
